There are currently two British standards for the design and installation of automatic sprinkler systems installed in the United Kingdom;
- LPC Rules for Automatic Sprinkler Installations Incorporating BS EN 12 845: 2009 (primarly addressing property protection of commercial and industrial premises);
- BS9251: 2014 (specific to domestic and residential occupancies).
Both sprinkler system design standards, strongly recommend the use of third party “listed” or “approved” contractors for the design and installation of sprinkler systems. The third party certification schemes should be accredited by The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
But what is third party certification?
Third Part Certification provides confidence that the contractor has sufficient competence and experience to meet the British Standards in a similar way to the “Gas Safe” certification scheme.
Currently, there are three accredited bodies that operate such certification schemes for sprinkler installations.
IFC Certification Ltd operates schemes for commercial & industrial sprinkler installations and Residential & Domestic sprinkler installations
