Sometimes, the issue of fire protection can bring up some very basic hurdles. A sophisticated sprinkler system without an adequate water supply is one of them, and while fitting a tank is the obvious answer, if your site restraints include limited ground space, it's time to get creative - and start digging.
It's all in the pipeline
Underground water tanks are installed for various different reasons, including waste water storage, storm-water collection and as vital water storage reservoirs for sprinkler systems.
Fire Defence has installed SPEL Tankstor underground tanks as part of five different projects in the past eight months, ranging from schools to retail and industrial units such as the Tesco site in Bracknell. And each site brings its own unique set of challenges.
The depth that each tank is buried depends largely on the ground water conditions and type of surround suitable for the site - the choices being pea gravel, concrete or a combination of both. Access shafts and sludge water removal pipes are
incorporated into each design, then the excavation gets underway. The tanks are then lowered into the hole, set and anchored, then finally they are alarmed to alert the client of any surprise changes in water level or external interference.
